Depression

Defining Depression

Depression is a common but serious mental health condition that affects the way people feel, think, and function day to day. It’s more than sadness—it can feel like a heavy fog that dims your energy, motivation, and ability to enjoy things you once loved. Depression can affect relationships, work, sleep, appetite, and overall well-being, often leaving people feeling stuck or disconnected from life.

There isn’t just one type of depression. It can show up in different ways depending on your background, biology, and experiences.

Common types include:

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia)
  • Seasonal affective disorder
  • Bipolar depression
  • Postpartum depression

While each type of depression has its own unique patterns, many share overlapping symptoms.

These often include:

  • Low mood or deep sadness
  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Sleep problems (too much or too little)
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, or worthlessness
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

If any of these symptoms have lasted more than two weeks, or if they’ve started to interfere with your everyday life, it’s time to consider depression treatment. While situational depression can self-resolve, clinical depression requires some type of intervention to improve. Depression doesn’t just go away if we ignore it.
