Outpatient Program (OP)
Blue Star’s Outpatient Mental Health Program provides weekly, one-hour sessions with expert clinicians and optional group support. It’s designed as a natural next step after more intensive care like IOP or PHP, yet stands on its own for anyone seeking consistent, in-depth therapy without an overnight stay.
What Is Mental Health Outpatient Treatment?
Outpatient treatment centers around scheduled therapy appointments, typically once a week for 45–60 minutes, in either individual or group formats.
You’ll work on evidence-based strategies for conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more, guided by licensed therapists.
You maintain full autonomy over your daily routine. You return home, to work, or to school after each session, while benefitting from professional support. Some may opt for supportive housing during this time.
Outpatient vs. IOP Mental Health Treatment
Outpatient treatment offers weekly sessions focused on long-term skill building and self-management. These short sessions are easy for most people to fit into even the busiest lives.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) deliver three-hour sessions, three times per week, combining individual and group therapy for concentrated progress.
While IOP can kick-start recovery during critical periods, outpatient care sustains gains, deepens insight, and reinforces coping tools over months rather than weeks.
Who Decides Your Level of Care?
Your journey begins with a careful evaluation. Luckily, there’s no need to figure out levels of care on your own. Our clinical team will review your history, symptom severity, and daily functioning, then recommend whether weekly outpatient therapy is the ideal starting point or if a more intensive program like IOP could better meet your needs.
Blue Star Mental Health’s experienced clinicians weigh safety, stability, and personal goals before making recommendations. Some clients begin in outpatient care and only “step up” to IOP or residential treatment if they need deeper support. Most progress from IOP into outpatient care once they’ve made enough progress, ensuring smooth continuity of care that minimizes risk and promotes lasting wellness.
Who Is Outpatient Treatment Right For?
- People who aren’t currently in crisis or who need 24-hour care.
- Individuals looking to maintain momentum after completing IOP or PHP
- People experiencing stable but persistent symptoms that benefit from weekly check-ins
- Those balancing work, school, or family commitments who need flexible scheduling
- Anyone seeking structured mental health support or diagnosis of symptoms.
Outpatient Treatment is a Natural Progression from IOP
After IOP’s concentrated therapy, outpatient sessions help you integrate new skills into everyday life. Weekly appointments ensure accountability and fine-tune coping strategies gained during more intensive care. You continue to receive tailored support while gradually resuming full independence in work, school, and relationships.
If you’ve never attended therapy or it’s been years since your last session, weekly outpatient care offers a gentle introduction. You’ll build rapport with a consistent therapist who helps you navigate topics at your own pace. Structured appointments create a reliable space to address stressors, learn mental health fundamentals, and establish lasting habits.
